Sharing a doc
Every doc has its own address, like markpad.md/d/k3v9x0q2m1ab. Sharing simply decides who else can open it. Click Share at the top right of the editor to start.
Who can open it
Pick one of these under General access:
- Only you. The doc is private.
- Anyone with the link can view. Anyone you send the link to can read it. They don't need an account.
- Anyone with the link can edit. Anyone you send it to can change the text with you, once they sign in.
- Same as folder. This is the default. The doc is private, unless it's inside a published folder; then it's readable by anyone with the folder's link.
Before you can open a doc to other people, Markpad needs to know your email address is really yours. If you signed in with Google, that's already done. Otherwise, choose Send code right there in the dialog, and paste the 6-digit code we email you.
Links that run out
A link can stop working by itself after a while. Choose Never, In 1 day, In 7 days or In 30 days. When the time is up, the doc becomes private again.
Search engines
By default, a shared doc stays out of Google and other search engines. Only people with the link can find it.
If you want it to be found, switch on Let search engines find this doc. A doc set to Same as folder follows whatever its folder says.
A nicer address
Random addresses are hard to guess, which keeps them safe. But sometimes you want one that's easy to say out loud. Click the pencil next to the link to choose your own, like markpad.md/d/meeting-notes.
A custom address:
- is 3 to 60 characters long;
- uses lowercase letters, numbers and single hyphens;
- starts and ends with a letter or a number.
Spaces turn into hyphens for you. Each address can only be used once, by one doc or folder, and a few words are kept back so nobody can pretend to be Markpad, such as help, api and support.
One thing to know: Markpad can take a custom address back at any time, for example if we need it ourselves or it's misleading. If that happens, the doc goes back to a random address, and links to the custom one stop working.
Taking a link back
Sent a link to the wrong person? You have two options:
- Reset link gives the doc a brand-new random address. The old link stops working, but the doc stays shared.
- Stop sharing makes the doc private again.
You can make up to 30 sharing changes in 10 minutes.
What your readers see
People with a view link see a clean, read-only page, with your name and when you last changed the doc. If they're signed in, they can choose Duplicate to my docs to keep their own private copy.
With an edit link, people choose Sign in to edit and the doc opens in the editor. Their changes save into your doc. If two people change the same part at the same time, Markpad asks which version to keep, so nothing is lost.
If a link is private, has run out, or was reset, people see This doc isn't available. That's the same page they'd see for a doc that never existed, so a closed link gives nothing away.
Anyone can Report a page that breaks the rules.
