Organizing docs

Once you have an account, all your docs live in the sidebar on the left. Open or close it with the button at the top left, or press ⌘\.

Docs and folders

Folders help you group related docs, like everything for one project.

  • To make something new, use New doc or New folder at the top of the sidebar. A new folder is ready for its name straight away.
  • To rename a doc or folder, double-click it, or select it and press F2. Press Enter to save or Esc to cancel. If you clear a doc's name, it goes back to using its first heading.
  • To keep something close at hand, pin it. Pinned docs and folders stay at the top under Pinned, in the order you drag them into. Only you see your pins.
  • To find a doc, press ⌘P or use Search docs. It looks through titles and text, and shows the 30 most recent matches.

Hover over a row to see what you can do with it: pin it, publish a folder, or move it to Trash. On a phone or tablet, these buttons are always shown.

Where a new doc goes

A new doc goes into the folder you're working in: the one you last clicked, or the folder of the doc you have open. It appears there right away as Untitled, and it's saved as soon as you type something. If you leave it empty, nothing is kept.

Want a doc that isn't in any folder? Click an empty part of the sidebar first, then choose New doc.

Moving docs

Move things by dragging them:

  • Drop a doc onto a folder to put it inside.
  • Drop it onto a doc in a folder to place it just above or below that doc.
  • Drop it onto the All Docs heading to take it out of its folder.

Inside a folder, docs stay in the order you put them in. That order is also the page order of a published folder. You can reorder folders the same way, by dragging one onto its neighbour. Docs that aren't in a folder are listed with the newest first.

If a move changes who can read a doc, for example moving it into a published folder, Markpad tells you.

Trash

Deleting is quick, and it's never final straight away. Move to Trash removes a doc or folder at once, and a message at the bottom lets you Undo it.

Changed your mind later? Open Trash at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Restore. Things stay in Trash for 30 days, then they're deleted for good. You can also Delete forever yourself.

If you restore a doc whose folder is still in Trash, the doc comes back on its own, outside any folder.

What the little icons mean

  • A globe next to a folder means it's published. Next to a doc, it means anyone with the link can open it.
  • A pin means you've pinned it.
  • A small mark with an app's name means that app wrote the doc for you, for example Claude.
