Publishing a folder
Publishing turns a folder into a small website. Each doc becomes a page, all the pages are listed beside the text, and readers move through them with Previous and Next.
Publish
Hover over the folder in the sidebar and click Publish. In the dialog, set access to Anyone with the link can read. Like sharing a single doc, this needs a verified email address.
The same dialog lets you:
- Copy link, or choose a Custom address such as
markpad.md/d/handbook, on the same terms as a doc's (see A nicer address); - let search engines find the pages;
- Open the published folder, to see it the way your readers will;
- Reset link, to give it a new address (old links stop working, pages included);
- Stop publishing.
A published folder can be read but not edited, and its link never runs out.
Which docs become pages
Every doc in the folder becomes a page, as long as it's set to Same as folder, which is the default. To keep one doc out, open its own Share dialog and set it to Only you.
Each page can also be opened at the doc's own address. If you move a doc out of the folder, it stops being shared, unless it has a link of its own.
Page order
The pages follow the order in your sidebar. To change it, drag the docs inside the folder. The folder's address always opens its first page.
Page addresses
Each page lives at the folder's address followed by the page's title, like markpad.md/d/handbook/getting-started. If two pages have the same title, the second gets a number: getting-started-2. A title that's too short to make an address, like "Go", uses the doc's own address instead.
If you rename a page, its address changes with it. A link that uses the doc's own address, like markpad.md/d/handbook/k3v9x0q2m1ab, always finds the page, whatever its title.
Stop publishing
When you stop publishing, every page closes at once. Each doc set to Same as folder becomes private again with it.
